RENEWABLE ENERGY
Meadowsend Timberland believes strongly in clean energy. Wind Power and low impact hydro electric are two examples of emission-less electrical generation that MTL believes are strong alternatives to the continued burning of fossil fuel. Both sources of energy are real sustainable solutions. While they may not be the entire solution, we are convinced that they will evolve as an important piece of the patchwork of ideas that will lead us to a day when strip mining coal and importing crude oil become less a part of our culture.
We certainly dont think that turbines should be on every ridge line in VT.
In fact we have made considerable efforts as a company to preserve a
number of special places we own so that they are forever pristine. Our
current and proposed wind projects take into account every environmental
consideration and are designed to operate around existing sustainable
forest management plans. This is, after all, our core business and belief.
If you have questions about wind energy and would like to learn some of the facts, please visit www.sheffieldwind.com . If you have an interest in learning more about low impact hydro electric, please visit National Hydropower Association.
LONG-TERM CONSERVATION
Conservation of green spaces is not a new concept.
John Muir knew the importance of conserving the Yosemite
Valley in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Gifford Pinchot
helped establish the conservation movement for the
wise-use of our valued natural resources in the early
900s. Throughout the history of MTL, we too have
embraced the need for the conservation of our green
spaces and the smart and sustainable use of our countries
natural resources. MTL currently has conservation
easements on over 50% of our land. These easements are
joint efforts between MTL and several vital organizations that strive to protect green spaces and educate the public about the importance of conservation.
EDUCATION
As a company that has great confidence
in its work toward sound stewardship,
MTL encourages and embraces
opportunities to speak with interested
citizens, students of both natural resource
management and environmental science
and with professionals at yearly
conventions to convey our ideas and
concepts of forest management.

RECREATION
MTL understands that outdoor recreation is a valuable medium for healthy and conscientious individuals and communities. This is why MTL keeps its lands
open for low impact recreation. MTL also takes
efforts to work with local organizations that help
to promote these forms of low impact recreation.
One such organization is VAST (Vermont
Association of Snow Travelers) which has worked
with MTL to establish a vast network of
snowmobile trails throughout many of its
properties.
Hiking is a low impact form of recreation permitted on MTL's land.
